All About that Pom Pom Life
Yes you guessed it! This post is a long time coming because I have been in love with the faux fur pom pom trend. I mean that fluffy pom on top of your newly knit hat just makes your handmade item that much more fun! If you have not guessed already, I’m working on a knit beanie pattern and I wanted to finish it off with a faux pom instead my typical yarn pom poms.
I looked online and could not find a Canadian fabric store that sold the type of faux fur I was looking for. So over the weekend, I hit up my local fabric store and found two types of fluffy faux fur. I guess you could say that longhaired faux fur is the key to making these pom poms. I bought the faux fur in two colours, blush pink and a brown animal print. Yes, I actually went for animal print which is not my typical style, but I love it! They will work so well with neutral coloured beanies!
A select few of these faux fur pom poms will also be hitting the shop tomorrow! So if you want to purchase head on over to the shop!
Let’s get started!
What you’ll need:
- Faux Fur
- Sewing needle
- Thread
- Tapestry needle
- Yarn
- Polyfill
- Circular template (e.g. bowl, jar, mug)
Step 1: Take the faux fur and turn it upside down. Take any circular object (bowl, lid, cup) that has a diameter of approximately 6″ for a medium sized pom pom. You can always modify to make a larger or smaller pom pom by changing the diameter.Trace around it and then using scissors, cut it out.
Step 2: Double up your thread to make it stronger. This will help prevent your thread from breaking as you pull. Using your needle and thread, loosely sew along the entire edge of your pom pom. Pull the thread as you go along,
Step 3: Add some polyfill to the center of your pom pom. Pull the thread tightly so that it cinches up nicely around the polyfill.
Step 4: To secure, weave the thread back and forth until the hole closes up.
Step 5: Weave in a strand of yarn so that you can attach the faux fur pom pom to your hat.
Super easy right! The hardest part to make this faux fur pom pom was finding the faux fur.
