How To Make Your Own Reusable Makeup Remover Pads
As you may know, we have slowly been moving in the direction of reducing waste within our home. So, when I realized I had not tackled disposable beauty products, the first thing that came to mind was reusable makeup remover pads. This tutorial will not only SAVE YOU MONEY but it will also help you reduce the amount of waste you contribute to the landfill. I mean that is win win! Let’s face it, makeup is a regular part of our routine (although since I work from home..less so haha!).
I am no beauty guru but needless to say, at the end of a work day or night on the town it is incredibly important to remove your makeup. I have really begun to see the importance of doing this, particularly at my age. No longer a spring chicken – those wrinkles are real! I totally embrace them because of course they are my laugh lines and I laugh a lot (for those of you who know me personally). Removing my makeup is the first step of my multi-step nightly routine these days. These reusable makeup remover pads are so soft, especially since I used organic bamboo fleece, which just add a touch of luxury to my handmade makeup removers.
Let’s get started!
What You’ll Need:
- Scrap Fabric
- I used a 100% cotton front and an organic bamboo fleece backing. These scraps were from the bandana bibs that I made for the shop and from a recent haul.
- Alternatively, you can use fleece fabric for both sides
- Thread
- Sewing machine or needle and thread (Using a sewing machine makes this process a lot faster)
- Scissors
- Pins
I used a 100% cotton front and an organic bamboo fleece backing for my makeup removers. These scraps were from the baby bandana bibs that I made for the shop (also see bandana bib blog post) and from a recent fabric haul. A few weeks ago, I was going through and decluttering and organizing my fabric (see fabric organization post) and realized I had quite a few of scraps that I just had no idea what to do with. What perfect timing, because of the size of these makeup removers they worked perfectly!
Step 1: Cut squares into 2″ x 2″ for both the front and back of the makeup remover pads.
Step 2: Take your front fabric and place it face up. Then place your back fabric with the front side facing down (i.e., front sides of fabric will be facing each other).
Note: If you are using fleece fabric that is the same on both sides this will not matter. Simply place one on top of the other.
Step 3: Sew a 1/4″ seam all the way around, making sure to leave about 1″ gap on one side. This will allow you to have space to pull the fabric through. Then trim the edges. This helps to reduce the bulk at the corners.
Step 4: Flip the fabric inside out by pulling it through the opening you just made. To close up the gap, simply pin the two pieces together and top stitch all the way around.
Pretty simple right! For cleaning these reusable makeup remover pads, I place them into a dedicates mesh laundry bag and throw them in the laundry. It’s as easy as that! Store them in a bowl or glass jar in your bathroom and you will no longer need to reach for those disposable makeup remover pads ever again!
